Progressive Spades Rules: How to Play & Score
Progressive Spades adds an exciting twist to traditional Spades by changing the requirements for each hand. This variation increases strategic depth and keeps experienced players engaged with evolving challenges.
What is Progressive Spades?
Progressive Spades is a variant where bidding requirements change each round. Instead of always bidding any number, specific round goals add structure and strategy to the game.

- Sequence typically repeats after 7-10 hands
- Adds variety and challenge to standard play
- Tests different skills each round

- Forces aggressive play
- Sets high-stakes tone
Round 2: Even Bids Only
- Must bid 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, etc.
- Odd numbers not allowed
- Changes calculation strategy
Round 3: Odd Bids Only
- Must bid 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, etc.
- Even numbers not allowed
- Opposite of Round 2
Round 4: Nil or Minimum 5
- Either bid nil (0) or at least 5
- No bids of 1-4 allowed
- High-risk round
Round 5: Exact Bids (No Bags)
- Overtricks (bags) = -10 points each
- Must hit bid exactly
- Highly strategic round
Round 6: Double Points
- All scoring is doubled
- Successful bid: 20 × bid
- Failed bid: -20 × bid
- Nil: ±200 points
Round 7: Free Round
- Normal Spades rules
